The true origins of golf are still not totally clear and there is much debate about where it first came from. However, it is generally accepted that the modern game we know today evolved in Scotland during the Middle Ages. The game became popular on an international level by the late 19th century when it spread to the rest of the UK, then to the other areas of the British Empire and the USA. In 1903 a group of British expatriates opened the first golf club in Japan and in 1913 the Tokyo Golf club at Komazawa was established by native Japanese who had enjoyed golf while in the United States. In the modern day, the USA is home to 50% of the world’s golf courses, while the UK is home to 8% and Japan 7%.
